How to choose a good tradesperson in Ireland
Updated 11 Oct 2026 · FindPro
Most jobs go well when you choose carefully at the start. This checklist works for almost any trade.
Check registrations where the law requires them
- Gas work: must be done by a Registered Gas Installer (RGI). Check the number on the RGI register.
- Electrical work: use a Safe Electric registered contractor, who can certify the work.
- SEAI grants: the contractor must be on the SEAI registered list for you to claim.
- Estate and letting agents: must hold a PSRA licence.
Ask about insurance
Ask for public liability insurance details, especially for building, roofing and tree work.
Get at least two written quotes
Compare what is included, not just the total. A cheaper quote that leaves out materials or waste removal can cost more in the end.
Look at real work
Ask for photos of similar jobs or a recent customer you can speak to. Genuine reviews help too.
Agree payment terms
For larger jobs, staged payments tied to progress are normal. Be wary of anyone asking for most of the money up front, or cash only with no receipt.
Watch for warning signs
Be careful with anyone who calls to your door offering work, pressures you to decide on the spot, will not give a written quote or an address, or asks you to pay a large deposit in cash. A good professional is happy to give you time to compare.
On FindPro, a professional can respond to your request only after claiming their profile and being approved by our team. Badges show only the checks we have actually made, with the date. Post your job free and compare quotes.
